Opening a page is not a neutral act. A visit leaves a record on the other side — an address, a time, a pattern of interest. In an investigation, that record can tell a subject they are being looked at, and who is looking.

Why operator exposure matters
It warns the subject. Repeated visits from one organisation's network are a signal. A subject who notices tends to change behaviour, delete material or lawyer up — often before the investigation has established anything.
It exposes the client. In due diligence and corporate work, the identity of the party asking the question is frequently more sensitive than the answer.
It skews what you see. Sources that profile visitors show tailored content. An investigator who arrives with an obvious fingerprint may not see what an ordinary visitor sees.
Anonymity as the default, not a mode
The important design decision is that this is not a button someone remembers to press. Sources are consulted this way as a matter of course, so operational security does not depend on discipline at 2 a.m.
It does not change what is lawful
Anonymous access protects the investigator; it does not expand what may be collected. The same legal basis, the same scope and the same retention obligations apply to material gathered this way as to anything else in the case file. Engramite is built for authorised investigative and security work, and nothing in it is intended to defeat controls a source is entitled to enforce.

Very little friction, which is the point. Pages open, material is read, and what matters is admitted to the case file with its source. The protection sits underneath the work rather than on top of it.
